Red Deer/Red Stag (South America)

Scientific Name: Cervus elaphus

Subspecies: None.

Distribution: Pampas of eastern Argentina (introduced 1910), and the Argentinian part of the Andes region (introduced 1922), Chile: Villarrica (introduced 1950), Osorno, Temuco (introduced in 1930).

Habitat: Normally the Red Deer lives on open land, but increasing population and hunting has forced it to retreat to large areas of forest and remote mountain forests.

Description: Large deer weighing around 300 kg. It measures up to 1,50 m over the shoulder. General colour reddish brown in summer and greyish brown in winter. The antlers are often large, branched rather than palmate, and have many points.

Hunting method: Stalking, lying in wait, luring calls during the rut.

Hunting available in: Ranches and woodland estates in the areas of distribution.
