It is now possible to combine hunting musk ox and reindeer in the same package. Together with our trusted partners, we offer a well-organized hunt in one of Greenland’s most spectacular hunting districts. This unique combination has already given hunters the experience of a lifetime, with unforgettable days in camp and in the field.
The musk oxen around Kangerlussuaq rank among the largest in the world, often larger than their Canadian counterparts. The district also produces strong reindeer trophies, though it should be noted that early in the season many reindeer are still in velvet.
The area provides ideal habitat for both species, with warm summers, dry winters, and limited snowfall allowing year-round grazing. The musk ox population originates from 27 animals relocated here in 1963 and has since grown to around 4,000–5,000 individuals.
Each year, a number of animals are released for hunting, with only a limited quota available for trophy hunters. Reindeer, on the other hand, are a natural part of the fauna in West Greenland and roam freely across the landscape.
Hunters are welcomed in Kangerlussuaq and flown by helicopter into the hunting district – an exciting and scenic start to the adventure. Hunting is carried out mainly on foot, though small boats or inflatable boats may occasionally be used.
No motorized vehicles are allowed, so participants should be prepared for long walks across terrain that is relatively easy to cover, with moderate height differences of 200–300 meters.
This combination hunt offers both world-class trophies and an authentic Arctic wilderness experience – truly something to remember for a lifetime.
The combined musk ox and reindeer hunt in Greenland is ideally scheduled for August and September. This period aligns with the peak of both species' activity and offers favorable hunting conditions.
Musk Ox
Musk oxen are typically hunted from August through October in the summer/fall hunts. During this time, their thick, long fur is still in prime condition, providing excellent trophy quality. By September, the harsh Arctic mosquitoes have diminished, and the weather remains relatively mild, enhancing the hunting experience.
Reindeer
Reindeer hunting season spans from August 1st to October 31st. In the early part of the season, reindeer are often found at higher elevations, requiring hunters to be prepared for more strenuous trekking. As the season progresses, reindeer descend to lower altitudes, making them more accessible and reducing the presence of insects.
This timing not only ensures optimal conditions for hunting but also allows hunters to experience the stunning Arctic landscapes during the late summer and early autumn months.
Søndre Strømfjord or as it is called in Greenlandic - Kangerlussuaq - is transected by the Arctic circle, which means in summer it never really gets dark, while in mid-winter there is nearly no light apart from moonlight and the fantastic northern lights.

They were the first outfitters to arrange trophy hunting for tourists after the Greenland Home Rule opened up the possibility to do so back in 1996, and since then they have built up a lot of experience in this specialised field.
